Who we are

Harvard Alumni in Tech is a volunteer-run Shared Interest Group for Harvard alumni working in technology. We have no paid staff. This policy covers this website and the tools we use to run our events, our newsletter and our volunteer program.

Questions about anything on this page, or a request to see or delete what we hold about you: info@harvardintech.com.

What we collect, and through which tool

We collect very little ourselves. Almost everything below is collected by a third-party tool we use to run something, and is held under that tool’s own privacy policy.

  • Google Analytics 4 (G-GCBX577FFD) — pages viewed, approximate location (derived from your IP address, which Google truncates), device and browser type, and how you arrived at the site. We see this only in aggregate.
  • Luma — if you register for an event, Luma collects your name, email address and whatever else that event’s registration form asks for.
  • Mailchimp — if you subscribe to our newsletter, your email address, plus whether you opened a message and which links you followed.
  • Google Forms — the answers you give on our volunteer application and our WhatsApp community application.
  • Givebutter — if you donate, your name, email address and donation amount, and whether you asked to be listed publicly or anonymously. We never see or store your card details; those go to Givebutter’s payment processor.

We do not ask for, and have no way to collect, any special-category information such as health, religion or political views.

Why we use it

To run our events, to send the newsletter you asked for, to review volunteer and community applications, to acknowledge donations, and to understand which parts of this site people actually use so we can improve them.

We never sell your data, and we never share it for anyone else’s marketing.

Cookies

This site sets no cookies of its own. The cookies below come from the tools listed above.

Pages that embed a Luma or Givebutter widget may also set that provider’s own cookies while the widget is on screen.

How to block or delete cookies

Every major browser lets you block or clear cookies — look for “Cookies and site data” in Chrome, “Cookies and Site Data” in Firefox, or “Privacy & Security” in Safari. Blocking cookies does not stop you using this site.

To opt out of Google Analytics across every site you visit, Google publishes a browser add-on: Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

Third parties

Each of these holds data under its own policy:

How long we keep things

  • Newsletter subscribers: until you unsubscribe, which every message links.
  • Event registrations: kept by Luma for as long as the event record exists.
  • Volunteer and community applications: for up to two years after you apply, so we can come back to you when a suitable project appears.
  • Donation records: as long as we are required to keep them for accounting.
  • Analytics: Google retains event data for 14 months.

Ask us at info@harvardintech.com and we will delete what we can, and tell you what we cannot delete and why.

Your rights

You can ask us for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email info@harvardintech.com and we will respond as quickly as a volunteer team can.

We have members in the UK and the EU. If you are one of them, the UK GDPR and the EU GDPR give you these rights, along with the right to object to processing and the right to complain to your national data protection authority — in the UK, the Information Commissioner’s Office.

Children

This site is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13, or under 16 in the UK and the EU. If you believe a child has given us information, email us and we will remove it.

Changes to this policy

When we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page.
